TRE comprises a series of 8 physical exercises that help free up muscular tension.
Many people have at some point in their lives experienced a frightening situation or prolonged stress. TRE was developed to help people process these situations. When experiencing fear or stress all mammals will tense their muscles and the body is put in ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode. When the dangerous situation is over the animals will tremble and shake to discharge the tension and then go about their lives as if nothing had happened. Most people suppress this natural process of release and go through life with increasing amounts of body tension, without realising it. Over time body symptoms will develop, such as headaches, fatigue, insomnia and back pain, to name a few.
The TRE exercises enable the body to discharge this tension in a controlled and supervised way. The vibrations, also called neurogenic tremors, generated in this manner can help loosen deep tensions in the body. The autonomic nervous system is thereby shifted to a state of rest. This relaxation can feel similar to the pleasant sensation experienced after a deep massage.
TRE is based on the knowledge that stress, muscular tension and trauma is a result of both psychological and physical factors. TRE is a result of the work of Dr. David Berceli. He worked with traumatised persons and populations in Africa and the Middle East. Through his research he understood that these naturally occurring vibrations are the body’s way of releasing tension and trauma.
Give that this mechanism of vibration is part of our natural behaviour as human beings, everyone can benefit from TRE. This proces can reduce emotions of anxiety and depression and decrease the symptoms from negative experiences such as accidents and shock.
